Exercises to relieve lower back pain

Almost everyone experiences lower back pain or discomfort at one time or another. Often, the source of the problem is not in the back at all, but in muscle and tendon tightness in the legs and hips.  This article outlines a series of exercises that can address an acute situation or help forestall future back pain, and research cited in The New England Journal of Medicine suggests that this type of therapy is just as effective as surgery. (Judging by web traffic, this is one of my most-read health and fitness articles, probably because it addresses a very common problem.)
